Privacy Policy

What we collect
Your name, email, username and password (stored as a bcrypt hash); your chosen interests, personalization details and narration style; the episodes you generate, the questions you ask mid-episode, quiz answers, and listening activity (when you listened and roughly how long). We record allowance reservations and usage, membership status, Stripe customer and subscription identifiers, and the version, time and method of your terms acceptance. We also record product events and acquisition information such as referral source, landing page and campaign tags. Some of these records are associated with your account to understand signup, usage and subscriptions. Page views are counted without your account or IP address: the page, the referring site, the kind of device, and the region of your browser's language setting.
How it's used
To make the product work: your topics and questions are sent to AI providers to write and narrate episodes, your interests personalize suggestions, and your listening history powers streaks, recaps and recommendations. Usage and billing records maintain your allowance, prevent duplicate charges and abuse, and help us improve the service. We do not sell your personal data. Account emails include verification, security and password recovery. Optional product emails, digests and reminders follow your email preferences and include unsubscribe controls.
Who else sees data
Generation sends topics, questions, relevant episode context and personalization details, which can include your name and information you provide, to Google Gemini, Anthropic and/or OpenAI. Spoken text is sent to Google Gemini for narration, and image generation requests may be sent to Google. Avoid adding sensitive personal information to prompts or personalization fields. Transactional and product email goes through Resend. If you subscribe, Stripe handles the payment - your card details go straight to Stripe and never reach our servers. Stripe also receives account contact information needed for billing and records checkout acceptance. If you sign in with Google, Google provides your name, email and profile photo to create or access your account. The server runs on DigitalOcean. Each processes data under its own privacy terms; none of them receive your Historai password. Depending on the provider, processing may occur outside your country, including in the United States.
Cookies
We use cookies for signed-in sessions, guest access, sign-in security and referral attribution. Browser storage also remembers preferences, player state, saved creation drafts and dismissed offers. Our acquisition cookie records where you first arrived and may be linked to your account at signup. A visitor cookie holds a random id so we can count visitors rather than page loads; it contains nothing about you and is never joined to an account. If you open a friend's invite link, a cookie keeps their invite code for up to 30 days so both of you get the invite bonus when you sign up; it is cleared at signup. Payment and Google sign-in pages are operated by their respective providers and use their own cookies and privacy policies.
Sharing you control
Episodes are private to your library unless you publish one to the Community or create a share link - both are explicit actions you can undo. Your public shelf at /u/your-username shows only episodes you chose to publish.
Retention & deletion
Your account and library data are kept while your account exists. You can delete your account in Profile → Membership → Account, in the app or on the web (step by step, and what is kept afterwards: historai.ca/account/delete); billing must be closed successfully before we remove the local account and its episodes. Usage and cost records without episode content, feedback you sent, and, for invited accounts, a one-way hash of the email are kept after deletion. Server backups rotate out within 7 days rather than being edited individually. Payment providers may retain transaction records for their legal and accounting obligations. Terms acceptance records are used to document the agreement you accepted, not as permission to send marketing emails.
