A Green Island in the Strait. In the summer of eighteen eighty-three, the Sunda Strait was one of the busiest stretches of water on Earth. It runs between Java and Sumatra, in what was then the Dutch East Indies, and every ship bound for the spice ports threaded through it. And somewhere in the middle of all that traffic, there's an island. There is. Small, wooded, uninhabited — about nine kilometres long, three green peaks rising out of the sea, named Perboewatan, Danan, and Rakata. Sailors used it as a landmark. Nobody feared it. I'm Theo, by the way — and this is Historai, where we chase the story behind the moment history turns. My co-host Ada is about to introduce us to a mountain that everyone had stopped worrying about. Its name was Krakatoa — and that spelling, oddly, comes from a Western telegraph typo. Its last real eruption was back in sixteen eighty, a mild one, two centuries gone. Fresh undersea cables had just wired the whole region to the world. But that sleeping island wasn't asleep — and by late spring it started clearing its throat. Three Months of Warnings. It began on the twentieth of May, eighteen eighty-three. Krakatoa sent up a column of ash, and the booms carried all the way to Batavia — modern Jakarta — nearly a hundred and sixty kilometres off. So people definitely noticed. What did they make of it? Mostly delight. Excursion boats sailed out for a closer look. It was treated as free theatre — a smoking mountain putting on a show. Picnics? At an erupting volcano? Picnics. And through June it grew louder. The northernmost peak, Perboewatan, had its whole cone blown away, and new vents kept tearing open across the island. That doesn't sound like a show anymore. The sea agreed. Tides ran strangely, ships in harbour moored with chains instead of rope, and great rafts of floating pumice drifted out across the Indian Ocean, thick enough to slow vessels down. Did anyone in charge sound an alarm? One man did. In early August, a Dutch engineer, Captain Ferzenaar, surveyed the island, counted three separate ash columns, and warned people to keep away. Nobody was listening. By the evening of the twenty-sixth of August, the throat-clearing had become something no one had a word for. Two Minutes Past Ten. By the afternoon of the twenty-sixth, Krakatoa went into its final violent phase. Ash climbed roughly twenty-seven kilometres into the sky — about seventeen miles straight up. And that was still the warm-up? It was. The next morning came four colossal blasts — at half past five, at forty-four minutes past six, then two minutes past ten, and again at forty-one minutes past ten. Which one was the monster? Two minutes past ten. That explosion is still the loudest sound ever recorded on this planet. Roughly two hundred megatons of energy — something like thirteen thousand Hiroshima bombs in a single instant. What does that even do to the island itself? It ate it. Two-thirds of Krakatoa collapsed into the emptied magma chamber below, a caldera opening in the sea. Around twenty-five cubic kilometres of rock were thrown out, ash flung up to eighty kilometres high, and the strait went pitch dark for two and a half days. Was anyone close enough to leave a record of it? One captain was, aboard the Norham Castle, about sixty-five kilometres off. In pitch darkness, under raining pumice, he wrote in his log. So violent are the explosions that the ear-drums of over half my crew have been shattered. My last thoughts are with my dear wife. I am convinced that the Day of Judgment has come. He genuinely thought that was the end of the world. And you can't blame him. Yet here's the strange thing — the blast itself killed almost no one. The real death was already racing across the water. The Black Wall of Water. When two-thirds of a mountain drops into the sea, the sea has to go somewhere. It went outward, in walls of water up to forty-one metres high — a hundred and thirty-five feet. That's taller than most buildings anyone in those villages had ever seen. Far taller. The waves swallowed the coasts of Java and Sumatra. Anjer, Merak, Telok Betong — whole towns simply erased. Around a hundred and sixty-five villages devastated, and the best count of the dead is thirty-six thousand four hundred and seventeen. And almost none of them from the explosion itself. Almost none. The water did it. A gunboat called the Berouw was picked up and carried nearly two miles inland, left stranded up a valley. One field worker at Merak said he looked up and saw a great black thing coming — and only realised at the last moment it was water. Did anyone survive standing in front of that? The steamer Loudon did, by turning bow-on and riding straight up the wave's face. And on Sumatra, a woman named Beyerinck watched ash push up through her own floorboards like a fountain, in total darkness. While the coasts drowned, something invisible was leaving the strait faster than any wave — and it would touch the whole planet. Heard a Tenth of the World Away. The sound of that two-minutes-past-ten blast kept travelling long after the water fell back. It was heard clearly about four thousand eight hundred kilometres away — roughly a tenth of the way around the planet. Four thousand kilometres? Where does a sound like that actually land? On Rodrigues Island, out near Mauritius, the chief of police logged what he called the distant roar of heavy guns. He assumed a ship was in trouble somewhere over the horizon. It was a volcano most of an ocean away. And people in Australia heard it too, didn't they? They did — as far off as Perth. But the truly uncanny part wasn't the sound you could hear. It was the pressure wave you couldn't. Meaning what, exactly? The explosion punched a pulse of air outward, and barographs across the world twitched as it passed. It circled the entire globe about seven times before it faded — what one writer called an earthquake in the air. So instruments in London were recording an eruption in the Sunda Strait, days later. And here's what made it new. Those fresh undersea cables carried the news out in hours — the Dutch paper Java Bode first, then the wires. It became the first catastrophe the whole world read about almost at once. The sound faded within a day; what the volcano threw into the sky lingered for years, and it turned the evenings strange. The Skies Turn to Fire. All that ash and sulphur flung eighty kilometres up didn't just fall back down. The finest particles caught the high winds and spread into a veil that wrapped the entire planet. And you'd actually see that from the ground? What did it look like? The evenings turned extraordinary. For months, sunsets and sunrises around the world glowed in violent reds and greens — skies the colour of fire-engines, long after the sun had gone. To the point people didn't know what they were looking at. Exactly. Fire brigades in England and the United States were called out to horizons that seemed to be burning. People rushed toward a blaze that wasn't there — it was Krakatoa's dust, catching the light. There's an art connection here too, isn't there? There's a debated one. Some scholars think the blood-red sky behind Edvard Munch's 'The Scream' was inspired by those very sunsets over Norway in eighteen eighty-three and eighty-four. It's a lovely theory — not proven, but plausible. And it wasn't only the light. The dust actually cooled things down. It did. Global temperatures dropped by around one degree Fahrenheit for a year, enough to nudge harvests and weather worldwide. A single morning in the strait had dimmed the whole world's sun. Out of all that ruin came something no one expected — a new science, and eventually a new island. The Child in the Caldera. When the ash settled, the wider world wanted to understand what had happened. In London, the Royal Society set up a dedicated Krakatoa Committee, chaired by a meteorologist named George Symons. How do you even study something that happened on the other side of the planet in eighteen eighty-three? You ask everyone. They gathered ship logs, tide readings, barograph traces, and eyewitness accounts sent in from across the globe, and published a landmark report in eighteen eighty-eight. That sounds almost like crowd-sourced science, a century before the phrase existed. That's exactly what it was — and many historians mark it as the birth of modern volcanology. For the first time, one eruption was measured worldwide as a single connected event. And the island itself? Two-thirds of it fell into the sea. Did that just stay an empty caldera? Not for long. Around nineteen twenty-seven to nineteen thirty, a new cone began breaking the surface right in the flooded caldera. They named it Anak Krakatau — the child of Krakatoa. So the mountain came back. It's still coming back. Anak Krakatau grows to this day, a living reminder that the strait is not finished with us. So step back with me for a second — a green little island nobody feared, three months of picnics beside an erupting volcano, and then one morning it detonates and cools the entire planet. And what stays with me is that middle turn — how easily wonder tipped into disaster. People rowed out to watch a spectacle, and the danger was reading itself out loud the whole time. We just didn't have the ears for it yet. Until suddenly the whole world did — through cables and barographs and blood-red skies, all pointing back to one strait. That's the real legacy. Krakatoa taught us the planet is one connected system, and that we're small inside it. It also gave us the science to listen better next time.
