Ada: The same month, November eighth, Operation Torch landed a hundred and seven thousand Allied troops under Eisenhower in Morocco and Algeria. Rommel was caught in a pincer. He still bloodied the green Americans at Kasserine Pass, six thousand casualties, until Patton took hold of them.
Theo: And the end?
Ada: May thirteenth, nineteen forty-three, Tunis. Marshal Messe surrendered and two hundred and seventy-five thousand Germans and Italians went into captivity. A loss to rival Stalingrad.
Theo: So now, the legend. The chivalrous Desert Fox, the clean war.
Ada: It was built in print. Nineteen fifty, a British brigadier, Desmond Young, wrote Rommel: The Desert Fox, hundreds of thousands of copies. Nineteen fifty-three, Liddell Hart published The Rommel Papers and framed the campaign as Krieg ohne Hass, war without hate.45
Theo: And the record underneath it?
Ada: In November nineteen forty-two, the SS colonel Walter Rauff, the man who designed the mobile gas van, arrived in Tunis with an Einsatzkommando. His unit forced nearly five thousand Tunisian Jews into forty labor camps along the front, looted gold and millions of francs, and shot civilians in Tunis and Sousse. In Italian Libya, over twenty-five hundred Jews were deported to a desert camp at Giado, where more than five hundred and sixty died.23
Theo: That's the Holocaust, right there in the war that was supposed to be clean. Did Rommel know?
Ada: Accounts differ. Some say he coordinated, others that he stayed on tactics and looked away. But the machinery was attached to his campaign, whatever he chose to see.
Theo: So the gentlemanly duel was a story told after, by people who liked how it sounded.
Ada: Told by survivors and biographers who needed a usable past. The desert really did breed respect between enemies, the Rats, the Folgore, the Free French. But hate was there too, in the camps along the same coast. And Alex, if anything here makes you want to stop and ask, who really did fool Rommel, or what became of Giado, you can pause any episode and ask us.
Theo: The valor was real. So was everything the legend left out.
Ada: This was Historai, where history answers back.
