Ada: Now, inside the game. Freeman reaches Sector C, pulls on the Mark Four hazard suit, and pushes a crystal sample, labeled GG thirty-eight eighty-three, into the beam of the Anti-Mass Spectrometer.12
Theo: And the manual says it's just an accident. A clumsy physicist knocks a cart and tears a hole in reality.
Ada: That's exactly what Sierra's November ninety-eight manual told players. Administrator Wallace Breen ordered the machine to one hundred five percent capacity, the sample hit the beam, and the Resonance Cascade ripped open a seam to Xen. Headcrabs poured through.24
Theo: And then the government sends Marines, but not to help.
Ada: To erase everyone. And through it all, a pale man in a tailored blue business suit keeps appearing at a distance, holding a briefcase. The developers just called him the G-Man.13
Theo: So was it really an accident?
Ada: Here's where the record overturns the tale. Dialogue in a later episode proves the G-Man deliberately delivered that unstable crystal to Breen to manufacture the disaster. Though who the G-Man truly serves, accounts differ, early scripts made him a shady government handler, Laidlaw later recast him as an interdimensional agent working for mysterious employers.
Theo: So the whole catastrophe was engineered. Freeman was set up.
Ada: Freeman kills the Nihilanth holding the rift open, and then the G-Man confiscates his weapons as government property, compliments his efficiency, and folds him into stasis. Employment, or an unwinnable fight.24
Theo: And the game that almost didn't ship?
Ada: Won over fifty game of the year awards, sold more than nine million copies. Modders Minh Le and Jess Cliffe built Counter-Strike on Valve's free toolkit. And when Sierra tried to keep the sequel rights, Valve fought them off, Monica Harrington says they even bluffed about quitting games to build an online store with Amazon, and by two thousand four, the settlements gave Valve everything. That store instinct became Steam.23
Theo: So a boring tram ride they almost cut became the blueprint for modern storytelling in games.13
Ada: From Ivan the Space Biker to an engineered apocalypse nobody could prove was an accident until years later. Like Khufu's horizon, the myth outlasted the men who built it, and then the record caught up. And remember, you can stop any episode and ask us anything. This was Historai, where history answers back.
