Ada:Picture this: it's pitch dark, thirty-six thousand years ago, deep inside a cave in southern France. Someone lifts a torch, and the flame throws light on a wall covered in galloping horses, lions mid-charge, rhinos with curved horns.
Theo:Thirty-six thousand years? So this is long before anything I'd call history.
Ada:Long before farming, before writing, before cities. This is Chauvet Cave, rediscovered in nineteen ninety-four. And the artists knew what they were doing — they scraped the wall smooth, used shadow for depth, even blew pigment through tubes to make hand stencils.
Theo:Wait — they spray-painted their own hands onto the rock?

Ada:For a long time the textbook answer was around two hundred thousand years ago, in East Africa. But in twenty seventeen a site in Morocco blew that up. Jebel Irhoud — fossils of people like us, dated to about three hundred thousand years.
Theo:Morocco? That's the opposite corner of the continent from where everyone said we started.
Ada:Exactly. Which is the point. There was no single garden of Eden. We seem to have emerged across Africa, populations mixing and drifting over a whole continent.
Theo:And when do these people start acting like us — not just looking like us?
Ada:That's the fight among scholars. But Blombos Cave in South Africa gives you goosebumps: engraved ochre and pierced shell beads, seventy to a hundred thousand years old. Somebody made jewelry.
Theo:So the mind was already switched on, long before anyone left.
Ada:For most of our history we simply stayed in Africa. Then, roughly sixty to seventy thousand years ago, a few bands crossed out — and met cousins already there, Neanderthals and Denisovans. We didn't just meet them. Every non-African today carries about two percent of their DNA.
Theo:So those few bands walked out — and then just kept walking.

Ada:And walk they did. By about sixty-five thousand years ago people were in Australia — which means they crossed open water to get there.
Theo:Wait, sixty-five thousand years ago they were building boats good enough for ocean gaps?
Ada:Rafts, at least, and repeatedly enough to found a whole continent's population. Europe comes around forty-five thousand years ago. The Americas are the last great room to fill — sometime after twenty thousand years ago, across Beringia, the land bridge where the Bering Strait is now.
Theo:How does one species handle deserts, ice, rainforest, all of it?
Ada:Technology and cooperation. Sewn, fitted clothing for the cold. The spear-thrower — the atlatl — and later the bow, which multiplies what a human arm can throw. And a partner: dogs, domesticated from wolves at least fifteen thousand years back.
Theo:The first alliance between two species. That's lovely, actually.
Ada:It is. But there's a shadow. Nearly everywhere humans arrived, the giant animals vanished — mammoths, giant sloths, marsupial lions. The megafauna extinctions track our footprints uncomfortably well.
Theo:So even as foragers, we were already reshaping whole worlds. And then, in a warming climate, some of us stopped moving — and started planting.

Ada:Around eleven or twelve thousand years ago, as the ice retreated, people in several places independently began growing their own food. Wheat and barley in the Fertile Crescent, rice and millet in China, maize in Mesoamerica, root crops in New Guinea.
Theo:Independently — nobody copied anybody. It just kept happening.
Ada:Same brain, same problem, similar answer. And then there's Göbekli Tepe, in Turkey — massive carved stone pillars, T-shaped, covered in animals, raised around nine thousand six hundred BCE.
Theo:Why does that one matter so much?
Ada:Because foragers built it, before farming was established. The old story said temples come after farming makes you rich. This suggests it might be the other way round — that gathering to build and worship helped push people toward settling down.
Theo:So the sacred came first, and the wheat followed?
Ada:It's debated, but that's the provocation. Farming gave us villages like Çatalhöyük — houses packed so tight you entered through the roof. It also gave us surplus, and with surplus came inequality, and harder, often shorter lives.
Theo:Grain meant strangers living side by side — and soon those villages swelled into something no human had ever seen before.

Ada:So picture southern Iraq, around four thousand BCE. A place called Uruk swells until it holds maybe forty thousand people — the biggest city anyone had ever lived in.
Theo:Forty thousand strangers packed together. How do you even run that without everyone stealing each other's grain?
Ada:That's exactly the problem writing solved. Around thirty-four hundred BCE the Sumerians start pressing marks into wet clay — cuneiform. And the very first texts aren't poetry, they're receipts.
Theo:Receipts? The birth of literature is somebody counting beer rations?
Ada:Grain and beer rations, exactly. Only later do you get law codes, then the epic of Gilgamesh. Writing was memory stored outside the skull — and that let you run temples, taxes, and kings.
Theo:So the same tool that gave us Gilgamesh first gave us the taxman.
Ada:Both at once. Add bronze around thirty-three hundred BCE, the wheel, the plough, ziggurats towering over the mud-brick — and you've got the machinery of civilization.
Theo:And that machinery ran for five thousand years on nothing but muscle, wind, and water — until one Scotsman tore up the limits.

Ada:Fast forward through empires, plagues and trade routes to Britain, roughly seventeen sixty to eighteen forty. James Watt patents an improved steam engine in seventeen sixty-nine — the key trick is a separate condenser.
Theo:A separate condenser. Sounds like the least glamorous world-altering gadget ever invented.
Ada:It's dull and it's everything. Old engines wasted heat reheating the cylinder. Watt kept the cylinder hot and cooled the steam elsewhere — suddenly the engine was efficient enough to be worth burning coal for.
Theo:And why does that matter so much more than, say, a better plough?
Ada:Because for the first time energy didn't come from a muscle, a river, or the wind. You dig up coal — fossilized sunlight — and pour raw power into cotton mills, iron, railways by the eighteen thirties.
Theo:So the ceiling that had capped every human society just... vanished.
Ada:Population and life expectancy surge, cities balloon. But the same smoke means child labor, black lungs, sixteen-hour shifts. Scholars call it the Great Divergence.
Theo:Cheap energy multiplied us beyond imagining — so what does that restless mind look like at eight billion?

Ada:Here's the number that stops me cold, Yev. Around eighteen oh-four there were about one billion humans. In November twenty twenty-two, we passed eight billion.
Theo:Eight-fold in two centuries, after three hundred thousand years of barely moving. That's not a curve, that's a wall.
Ada:And packed into it: electricity, antibiotics, flight, computers, the internet going public in the nineties, smartphones around two thousand seven. Since about that same year, more of us live in cities than in the countryside.
Theo:And yet it's the same brain. The hand that stenciled itself on the wall at Chauvet is the hand holding the phone.
Ada:Exactly the same species, same mind. And there's a dark rhyme — remember the Ice Age megafauna vanishing as we spread? Now it's climate change and mass extinction, the same echo at planetary scale.
Theo:So step back and look at the whole line. What's the one thread running through it?
Ada:For me it's this: every leap — the painted cave, the seed, the clay tablet, Watt's engine — was the same trick. Store something outside the body. A picture, a harvest, a word, a fire we didn't have to breathe out ourselves.
Theo:An unbroken relay from an ochre handprint to eight billion, run by a mind that never actually changed — only what it could reach.
