Ada: On Saturday, the sixth of September, fifteen twenty-two, the Victoria slipped into Sanlúcar — the same little port where five ships had set out three years before.
Theo: Five ships out. How many men stagger off this one?
Ada: Eighteen. Eighteen from the sixty who had left the Spice Islands, and most of them too sick to stand. By Pigafetta's reckoning they'd sailed more than fourteen thousand four hundred and sixty leagues, east to west.
Theo: Eighteen exhausted men, one leaking hull. That's the first time in history anyone circled the earth?
Ada: The first documented circumnavigation — by the ship and this crew, not by Magellan, who'd been dead sixteen months. Two days later they reached Seville, and here's how Pigafetta himself recorded it.
Ada: Monday the 8th of September, we cast anchor near the mole of Seville, and discharged all the artillery. Tuesday, we all went in shirts and barefoot, with a taper in our hands to visit the shrine of St. Maria of Victory, and of St. Maria de Antigua.
Theo: Barefoot, in their shirts, carrying candles. No parade, no fanfare — just gratitude that they were alive.
Ada: That's the whole story in one image. A voyage dreamed up for cloves and profit ended as a handful of ghosts walking barefoot to a chapel called Victory. They'd bent the map of the world, and they were simply glad to be home.
Theo: When you lay it end to end — the mutiny in Patagonia, the ocean that ate the crew, Magellan cut down in the surf, a stolen day discovered over a food bill — it's astonishing any of them made it back at all.
Ada: And maybe that's what it says about people: nobody set out to change the shape of the known world. They set out to survive, one bad choice and one lucky wind at a time, and the history came as a by-product.
Theo: There's a whole grim story left in the Trinidad's crew, the ones who stayed behind at the Spice Islands — if you're curious, it's one tap away. And remember, you can interrupt any of our episodes to ask us anything.
Ada: This was Historai — where history answers back.
