Ada: Here's the mistake that ends an empire. To stop the rebellion spreading, Hipper disperses the fleet. He sends the Third Battle Squadron, Markgraf, König, Bayern, east through the Kiel Canal, back to Kiel.34
Theo: He's trying to quarantine the trouble by scattering it.
Ada: And locked in the brigs of those ships are the ringleaders, including forty-seven prisoners bound for detention in Kiel. So he doesn't contain the mutiny. He ships it, by sea, straight into a fresh city full of sailors and dockworkers.4
Theo: Carrying the news and the martyrs in one convoy.
Ada: The squadron arrives on November first and second. Kiel hears everything. By November third there are mass demonstrations demanding the Wilhelmshaven men be freed. Soldiers fire on the crowd, and that is the spark of the German Revolution.34
Theo: From stokers refusing to light a fire to a full revolution, in days.
Ada: On November sixth, sailors and shipwrights seize Wilhelmshaven itself and set up soldiers' councils. Within eleven days of those first refusals at Schillig Roads, Kaiser Wilhelm the Second abdicates, and on November eleventh the armistice ends the war.34
Theo: And the popular story still says it all began in Kiel.
Ada: It began in the fog off Wilhelmshaven, with men who refused to die to protect an admiral's pride. That's the thing about this story, Historai. An empire wasn't toppled by a general or a treaty. It was toppled by sailors doing arithmetic, deciding their lives were worth more than someone else's honour.
Theo: And if a date or a name ever makes you want to stop us and ask, do it. Pause the episode anytime and put the question to us.
Ada: This was Historai - where history answers back.
